Abstract: 

The incorporation of covalently bound metal complexes into DNA is critical to investigation of thermal charge transfer mechanisms in duplex DNA. Here we report the preparation, spectroscopic and structural characterization of ruthenium and rhenium modified iminomethylpyridine (IMPy) thymidine nucleosides. The optical absorption, electrochemical potentials, and emission properties make these probes promising candidates for incorporation into duplex DNA with little perturbation of the structural integrity of the duplex.
